Casement Park Stadia in STEPS from a BIM import Waterloo Station imported through BIM into STEPS

BIM interface

Modelling pedestrian flows early in the design of buildings, stadia and transport interchanges has been made easier with the implementation of a BIM interface in STEPS version 5.1, leading to enhanced solutions and saving design time and cost.

Mott MacDonald provided a unique contribution focusing on the creation of a BIM compliant pedestrian modelling solution. Working closely with the team, BIM models were integrated with the STEPS software, where detailed analysis was undertaken to predict pedestrian movement, ultimately enabling the design team to identify bottlenecks and optimise the design.

The software’s BIM functionality has been developed in line with Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) to achieve compatibility with all principal design packages. By enabling the rapid import of 3D BIM model, the interface opens up the potential for STEPS to be applied to any space utilised by pedestrians.

We have also worked in partnership with the BIM Academy at the University of Northumbria, UK, on the update to ensure the robustness of the transferred BIM data. Of course, STEPS can still be used for projects which have not been designed using BIM. BIM compatibility will enable pedestrian modelling to be carried out far more often, more quickly and more cost-effectively.

BIM Awards

In collaboration with the BIM Academy, we achieved success at the Build London Live 2012 competition, winning “Best Multidisciplinary BIM and use of Interoperability Award”.

The judges were impressed by “The level of organisation and collaborative working, and the richness and breadth of analysis and data outputs to deliver a highly creative design.”

The team went on to win the top award – the openBIM Award – at Build Qatar Live 2012 event. The judges praised: “A fantastic effort. The level of social connectivity and communication was incredible.”
